New Mexico makes it 17, joins the marriage equality chorus 12/20/13

New-Mexico-quarterNew Mexico’s state Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Thursday that same-gender marriage (gay marriage) was allowed under the state constitution.

Denying same-gender couples the right to marry and thus depriving them and their families of the rights, protections and responsibilities of civil marriage violates the equality demanded by the equal protection clause of the New Mexico Constitution,” wrote Justice Edward Chavez.

After various County Clerks across the state had began issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples, and various courts with limited jurisdiction had ruled gay marriage legal, the Supreme Court was asked to weigh in and provide clarity for the entire state.  With Thursday’s ruling, they added New Mexico to the roster of states, now at 17, plus the District of Columbia, who recognize same-gender marriage.

“click”  Another domino falls, and not a single person’s religious freedom has been infringed upon. We have  33 to go.

It is no longer a matter of if marriage equality becomes the law of the land in the entire nation, it’s now simply a matter of when.
