Tulare-Kings PFLAG kicks off new year in new digs 1/13/14

pflag_tulare_kingsNow in the sixth year of “you’ll never get it off the ground in Visalia”, the Tulare-Kings chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays is moving to a new location.

Beginning with the January meeting, the local chapter of the international PFLAG organization will begin 2014 at it’s new meeting site, the Congregation B’nai David, located at 1039 S. Chinowth (just north of Veva Blunt Elementary School), in Visalia.  The first meeting of the year will be at 3pm, Sunday, January 19th.

From the Tulare-Kings PFLAG website:

PFLAG provides a safe and confidential space place to talk about sexual orientation and gender identity, and works to build a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.
There is no cost to attend, and membership is optional.
PFLAG Tulare and Kings Counties is a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status.

From the PFLAG National website:

Founded in 1972 with the simple act of a mother publicly supporting her gay son, PFLAG is the nation’s largest family and ally organization. Made up of parents, families, friends, and straight allies united with people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), PFLAG is committed to advancing equality and societal acceptance of LGBT people through its threefold mission of support, education and advocacy. PFLAG now has over 350 chapters and 200,000 members and supporters crossing multiple generations of American families in major urban centers, small cities and rural areas in all 50 states. This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced, and serviced by PFLAG National, located in Washington, D.C., the National Board of Directors and 13 Regional Directors.

The Tulare-Kings PFLAG works closely with local and national LGBT organizations to support individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and their families and friends.  With resources, advice, confidentiality, and leadership in the wider community, Tulare-Kings Counties PFLAG –

promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through:

  • support, to cope with an adverse society;
  • education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and
  • advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights.

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.

The January meeting will be a presentation about the PFLAG National Conference that took place this past October. It was attended by Dr. Kathryn Hall, Cathy Brass, and Joan Palmer. They lobbied our Congressman and Senators. They attended plenaries and workshops and have much to report about the work PFLAG National is doing in DC and around our country. Kathryn, Cathy, and Joan have information that can be used by our local chapter and out in the community. Come join and get ready to advocate even more.

My personal thanks to Family Health Care Network for hosting 5 years of exciting, emotional, and educational monthly PFLAG meetings in their downtown Visalia facility.  As TK-PFLAG has grown, we’ve often filled the rooms at FHCN to overflowing.  The new meeting site at Congregation B’nai David will allow the continued growth of our local group, and I look forward to many years of continued service to the parents, family and friends of the LGBT community.
