Utah makes 18! 12/20/13

utah_state_sealI didn’t see this one coming, that’s for sure.

A Federal judge in Utah on Friday struck down that state’s ban on marriage equality.

The state’s current laws deny its gay and lesbian citizens their fundamental right to marry and, in so doing, demean the dignity of these same-sex couples for no rational reason,” wrote U.S. District Court Judge Robert J. Shelby. “Accordingly, the court finds that these laws are unconstitutional.

The judge did not stay his order pending any possible appeals, so it goes into effect immediately.  Unless the state appeals, and a stay is issued by the Appeals Court, it is now legal for gay and lesbian residents of Utah to marry someone of the same gender.

It will be interesting to see how this one plays out in appeals court, given the recent rulings on marriage equality by other courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States.
