In 2008, Tom and Wendy Montgomery joined other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in walking the streets of Bakersfield in support of Proposition 8.  They didn’t know at the time that their young son was gay.  What happened when they found out is a remarkable story of love, family, and faith.

The Montgomery family is the subject of a short film by The Family Acceptance Project and Dr. Caitlin Ryan, “Families Are Forever“.

The Tulare-Kings Counties PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) will screen the film at it’s next meeting, Sunday March 16, 2014, at 3pm.  Tom and Wendy Montgomery will be the featured speakers after the video, to talk about their journey from unquestioning acceptance of the Mormon Church’s teachings on homosexuality, to their unquestioning acceptance of their gay son.  It’s a remarkable story of a family that put love above all else, even as many in their church rejected them.

Still devout Mormons, the Montgomerys work to educate the minds and change the hearts of any who would reject their son in the name of God.  From quiet, unremarkable lives of routine and religion, to activism and leadership, the Montgomerys have been speaking out, not in defense of their son, but in support and love.

Tulare-Kings PFLAG meets every third Sunday, of the month, 3pm till 5pm, at:

Educational and Cultural Center
Congregation B’nai David,
1039 S. Chinowth, Visalia

The Montgomerys will be speaking at the March meeting, Sunday, 3/16/14

The public is invited.  Refreshments will be served.
